Learning English Reading Skills Through Manga
Course Description:
This 24-week course explores the art of reading comprehension through manga, combining visual storytelling with critical analysis. Inspired by the IB MYP English curriculum, students will develop skills in reading, writing, and critical
thinking while analyzing themes, cultural contexts, and societal issues in manga. Through inquiry-based learning and creative projects, students will gain a global perspective and deepen their understanding of language, literature,
and communication.
Learning Goals:
- Students will enhance their critical thinking skills by analyzing narrative structures, themes, and visual-textual relationships in manga, fostering their ability to evaluate and interpret complex ideas.
- Students will develop a global perspective by exploring how manga reflects cultural values, societal issues, and diverse viewpoints, fostering empathy and understanding of different cultures.
- Students will improve their communication and creative skills by engaging with interdisciplinary projects and creating their own manga-inspired stories, demonstrating their comprehension and personal expression.

Course Outline:
Part 1: Foundations of Manga and Reading Comprehension (Weeks 1–10)
Week 1: Introduction to Manga
- Overview of manga as a literary and artistic medium.
- Introduction to reading comprehension strategies (e.g., skimming, scanning, predicting).
Week 2-3: Understanding Manga Genres and Forms
- Exploring popular manga genres (e.g., shonen, shojo, seinen, isekai).
- Identifying features of manga (e.g., panel layout, speech bubbles, sound effects).
- Researching manga context and history.
Week 4-6: Identifying Key Ideas and Details in Manga
- Analyzing characters, settings, and plot through text and visuals.
- Recognizing main ideas and supporting details in manga panels.
Week 7: Summarizing and Paraphrasing Manga Content
- Writing concise summaries of manga chapters.
- Practicing paraphrasing to improve comprehension and writing skills.
Week 8: Visual and Textual Relationships
- Understanding how images and text interact to convey meaning.
- Decoding visual cues (e.g., facial expressions, action lines) to enhance comprehension.
Week 9: Making Inferences and Predictions
- Interpreting implied meaning and subtext in manga.
- Predicting story outcomes using context clues.
Week 10: Perspective and Point of View in Manga
- Understanding narration styles (e.g., first-person vs. third-person).
- Analyzing how perspective influences reader interpretation.
Part 2: Deepening Analysis and Critical Thinking (Weeks 11-16)
Week 11: Exploring Themes and Messages in Manga
- Identifying central themes and moral lessons in manga.
- Comparing thematic elements across genres or series.
Week 12-13: Cultural and Social Contexts in Manga
- Analyzing how manga reflects Japanese culture and societal issues.
- Analyzing how manga addresses social issues (e.g., bullying, environmentalism).
- Discussing the relevance of these issues in today’s world.
Week 14-15: Author’s Craft in Manga
- Exploring the stylistic choices of manga creators (e.g., tone, mood, artistic style).
- Understanding how authors develop characters and world-building.
Week 16: Making Connections to Personal Experiences
- Reflecting on how manga themes relate to students’ lives.
- Discussing how manga fosters empathy and understanding of diverse perspectives.
Part 3: Application and Creative Expression (Weeks 17–24)
Week 17: Active Reading: Annotating Manga
- Learning how to annotate manga panels effectively.
- Highlighting key ideas, themes, and visual techniques.
Week 18-19: Course revision
- Reviewing key skills learned throughout the course and creating a presentation.
Week 20-22: Final Project- Creating Alternate Endings
- Reimagining the ending of a manga chapter in groups.
- Practicing creative writing and critical thinking.
- Applying knowledge of narrative structure, themes, and character development.
Week 23: Final Project Presentation
- Presenting final projects to peers (e.g., analysis essay, creative manga story, multimedia presentation).
- Reflecting on growth in reading comprehension and critical thinking.
Week 24: Course Reflection and Wrap-Up
- Reflecting on how manga has enhanced reading comprehension and analytical skills.
- Discussing how the course aligns with IB MYP key concepts and global contexts.
